Fun Fact

Did you know that you can tell how old a Zippo lighter is based on how many markings are on the bottom?

It's true... On the bottom of Zippo lighters are markings, either slashes, numbers or dots. More markings or a higher number indicates the lighter is older which in turn is worth more.

This one for example is from 1969.

  1. That is an interesting fact! Thanks for sharing it. I'll be looking for these markings now when I see an old lighter.
Your pictures didn't show up on my computer, but I'll look up some pictures on google.

  2. Hello,

What sources to you use to know things like this. I like to go to estate sales, but I never know if I'm getting something good. How do you make sure? I purchased some blue printed plates and found out later they were worthless due to the amount of them being sold. Thanks

    1. We pull our information from many different sources. For example the Zippo lighter fact came from my dad. He had learned about those years ago. As for knowing if an item is worth anything we just do our research. We are not appraisers but we can give estimates on items. We do also have dealers in our store who have their own items in here and depending on the item we would contact them for information on it.

As for know what to buy, we buy what we like. If we know nothing about the item we try to get it at its lowest cost so that if it truly is not antique we are not out a total loss.

In regards to your plates if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for them? Were there any markings on the bottom? And how many were in the set?

  3. Thanks for the fun fact, Jenna! My brother collects Zippo lighters and I've never heard of this before. I'll tell him about it though, maybe it will give his hobby more of a significance to him! Thanks for sharing with us!
